In February 2004, CNN Headline
News Anchor, Renay San Miguel interviewed director, Laura
Lipson about the film. Here is an excerpt:
Renay
San Miguel:
"Obviously you're a White woman working on this
documentary about Black history. I'm wondering how this
was transformative for you, especially when you were
talking to some of the survivors and some of those who
were there, who are still alive, concerning what went
on in some of the Black communities in the South?" |
Laura
Lipson:
"Well, the women of "Standing on My Sisters'
Shoulders" are really inspiring to me. But I feel
their story goes beyond Black or White. I feel like
it's an American story. Civil Rights, getting our right
to vote, the freedoms of the Constitution are all a
part of what America was based on, and I think the story
goes beyond color lines. I think it's a story for all
of us. And, I was always interested in the Civil Rights
movement, but this really brought it home to me to a
very personal level, hearing their individual stories." |
